Karate is a type of self-defense training that focuses on using hands and legs when fighting instead of weapons. It involves energetic and repetitive movements from both hands and legs. Kata in karate is a sequence of fighting movements. This helps you train for offensive attacks like punches and kicks and defensive moves such as blocks.
The reason why it is called so is that all the movements in the three Tekki kata, apart from the crossing of feet in kosapositon a few times, are performed in horse stance. A lateral straight line is the embusen for all Tekki kata which means there are hardly any stepping motions which are forward or backward.
Kata is very important in karate, and I believe that the true meaning of kata is in the bunkai. Goju is great for this as it has very practical and IMHO effective bunkai. What I don't agree with is that any style is unique in having soft blocks or parries. Goju has the same hard and soft blocks that the majority of other styles of karate have.
Karate will need to do the same, or it will have a hard time staying on the podiums. But with sparring, it was easier to have e-scoring - this can't be said of kata. There must be humans judging the performance, and this is going to be Karate's downfall if the Karate committee doesn't do this right.
